Gordon Recognizes Rutherford’s Volunteer Fire Departments

U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon presents Congressional Record Statements honoring Kittrell and Rutherford County volunteer fire departments to Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Bobby Brewer and Chief George Curray and Rutherford County Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Stephen Windham and Assistant Chief Joe Barrett.
U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon recently met with volunteer firefighters in
Rutherford County to thank them for their hard work and sacrifice.
"Nobody thinks to thank firefighters until they or loved ones
experience a fire firsthand and are helped by these selfless
volunteers," Gordon said. "That's the reason I wanted to recognize the
volunteer fire departments in Rutherford County.
"My mother grew up in a rural area before they had a volunteer fire
department. When she was a child, her house burned, and it was so
traumatic to her that every time she hears a fire engine, she relives
that tragedy."
Gordon met with members of Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department and
Rutherford County Fire Department recently to present each department
with a Congressional Record Statement to honor their service.
"Without volunteer fire halls, like Kittrell and Rutherford County,
many places in the Sixth District would lack effective fire
protection. In the state of Tennessee, over 70 percent of fire service
is provided by volunteers. Among these volunteers, almost 75 percent
work other daily jobs…Sadly, an average of two firefighters die each
year in Tennessee in the line of duty," reads the statement.
Gordon, a member of the Congressional Fire Caucus, has supported the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Firefighter Assistance grant
program.
In addition to Kittrell and Rutherford County, Gordon also honored
other Rutherford County volunteer fire departments: Salem-Blackman
Volunteer Fire Department, Almaville Volunteer Fire Department,
Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department, Walter Hill Volunteer Fire
Department, Christiana Volunteer Fire Department, Southeast Rutherford
Fire Department Inc. and Rockvale Volunteer Fire Department.
